Curated Meals For Special Occasions

In every occasion where people come together — a naming ceremony, a housewarming, a milestone birthday, a quiet family lunch after a long time apart — the food is never just food.
It is the first thing people smell when they walk in. It is what they talk about on the way home. It is what the elder at the table quietly compares to how it used to be made. It carries the feeling of the occasion long after the occasion itself is over.
At Malu’s Kitchen, this is how we think about cooking for your gatherings. Not as a catering assignment. As a responsibility.
Delivering across all of Bangalore for occasions · 10+ years of Thanjavur tradition
Have an occasion in mind? Start with a conversation.
How We Work
Before we suggest a single dish, we want to understand your occasion.
What is being celebrated, and what feeling should the meal carry? Who is coming — and are they familiar with Thanjavur-style cooking or will this be their first time? How will the food be served — banana leaf, steel plates, family-style? Are there elders at the table with specific preferences, or young children we should keep in mind?
These are the questions we ask first. A Seemantham for close family calls for a very different spread than a community housewarming for sixty neighbours. The food should reflect that. We take the time to understand before we suggest — and we suggest honestly, including when something is better left out.
The conversation about price comes at the end, once we both know what the occasion actually needs.
Occasions We Have Cooked For
Every occasion below came to us with a different need. We approached each one the same way — with a conversation first.
- Seemantham & Valaikappu — traditional Tamil ceremonies where the food carries as much meaning as the ritual itself
- Sashtiabdhapoorthi & Sadabhishekam — milestone celebrations that call for the full grandeur of a Thanjavur feast
- Griha Pravesham — a housewarming where the first meal sets the tone for the home
- Birthday & Anniversary lunches — intimate gatherings where homely food means more than restaurant food ever could
- Apartment community events — where we have fed 30 to 100 people the same food we would cook for our own family
- Office & team lunches — for teams who want something real, not a catering box
What We Stand For
We are a home kitchen, not a catering company. The distinction matters to us.
Every dish is cooked the same morning it is served. The same iron kadai. The same small-batch spice roasting. The same unhurried pace that a Thanjavur gravy needs to find its depth. We do not have a central production kitchen running bulk batches the night before. We cook the way we cook every day — with care, and without shortcuts.
If a request asks us to stretch what we can do honestly, we will say so. We would rather suggest a menu that is slightly smaller and entirely right than one that is impressive on paper but compromised in the pot. We hold this position not out of stubbornness but out of respect — for the occasion, for your guests, and for the food itself.
What You Can Expect From Us
- A real conversation — we will listen before we suggest
- An honest menu — built around your occasion, not our convenience
- Food cooked the same morning — no pre-cooked, reheated, or transported-from-yesterday dishes
- The same Thanjavur Iyer-style cooking that has earned us a 4.9★ rating from our daily customers — brought to your table with the same devotion
- Transparent communication throughout — on what we can do, what we cannot, and what it will cost once we know what you truly need
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How far in advance should I reach out?
A: The earlier the better — ideally at least 5 to 7 days before the occasion. This gives us time to understand what you need, plan the menu together, and source the right ingredients. For larger gatherings of 50 or more, two weeks’ notice is ideal. That said, if your occasion is sooner, do reach out anyway — we will tell you honestly what is possible.
Q: What is the minimum number of people you cook for?
A: We are most comfortable cooking for 15 people and above for occasion meals. Below that, our daily fresh meal service is usually a better fit. There is no upper limit — we have cooked for gatherings of over 200 people.
Q: Do you serve on banana leaves?
A: Yes, and we strongly recommend it for traditional occasions like Seemantham, Griha Pravesham, or Sashtiabdhapoorthi. Eating on a banana leaf is part of the Thanjavur tradition — the leaf enhances the flavour of the food and the feeling of the occasion. We can arrange banana leaves as part of the setup. Please mention this when you reach out.
Q: Can you cook for guests who are not familiar with Tamil Brahmin food?
A: Absolutely. Many of our occasion bookings are mixed gatherings where not everyone has grown up with this style of cooking. We take this into account when curating the menu — ensuring there are dishes that are familiar and approachable alongside the more traditional preparations. We have never had a guest go home hungry or confused.
Q: Do you cook for non-Tamil occasions — birthdays, anniversaries, office lunches?
A: Yes. The food we cook is rooted in Thanjavur tradition, but the occasions we cook for are not limited to Tamil ceremonies. Anyone who wants genuinely home-cooked, honest food for a gathering is welcome to reach out. The food speaks for itself regardless of the occasion.
Q: Is the food 100% vegetarian?
A: Yes, always. Malu’s Kitchen is a 100% vegetarian kitchen rooted in the Tamil Brahmin Iyer tradition. No meat, no eggs, no exceptions.
Q: Do you deliver across all of Bangalore for occasions?
A: Yes. For occasion meals, we deliver anywhere in Bangalore. Our daily meal service is limited to specific areas, but for curated occasion orders the delivery economics work out across the city. Tell us your location and we will confirm.
Q: Can we taste the food before confirming a large order?
A: This is a fair ask and we are always happy to discuss it. WhatsApp us and we can work something out — especially for very large occasions where you want confidence before committing.
