Thattai is a festival snack in Thanjavur homes. Round, flat, and deeply crunchy, it is made during Krishna Jayanthi, Diwali and Karthigai — and eaten throughout the year by anyone who has ever had one.
Its character comes from the combination of rice flour, urad dal flour, roasted chana dal and curry leaves — pressed flat, pricked to prevent puffing, and fried slowly until it achieves a deep, even crunch that holds for days. The curry leaves fry into the thattai itself, adding a fragrance that is distinctively South Indian and instantly recognisable.
Ours follows the Thanjavur home kitchen recipe — no shortcuts on the roasted chana dal, which gives Thattai its characteristic texture and nuttiness. Made fresh, fried clean, packed properly.
